Seri had always been the outcast. She never had friends while growing up, she found it hard to talk to people and she was socially awkward. Her story was not the typical intelligent but shy story that people know, hers was much worse.
She was born into the family of five, her parents never expected her, so they tried aborting. As heaven would have it, all their efforts to abort proved very futile, she was just so stubborn. Her mother never failed to remind her of how unwanted she was and how she wouldn’t hesitate to give her up. To worsen Seri’s situation, she was unintelligent, slow to learn and had a plain face. Life was tough especially for her.
While growing up, she was constantly bullied, the bullying was so much that she lost her self esteem and would hide, she was always fidgety and felt like she would never be enough for anyone or in anything. Even after she left home, she was forever stuck with her state.
Seri struggled through school, she was constantly compared by family and colleagues, she was always told what to do and being timid, she would do whatever people want without confrontations.
For years she couldn’t look herself in the mirror, she hated seeing herself, she wondered why she couldn’t be intelligent or pretty like her siblings were. She wondered why her parents would not accept her even though it was their mistake, she wondered why the world classified people into classes and she wondered why she had to be in the lowest class.
When life became too much Seri simply gave up. She gave up on life, on people and most importantly, herself. She continued to see herself through the world’s eyes and concluded she wasn’t pretty, therefore there had nothing worth fighting for in her life. Seri continued like that for a while until she met Lily.
Lily was everything Seri was not, she was confident, positive, always smiling and uncaring of people’s opinion of her. Seri wondered how a person could be as positive as Lily especially after listening to what she had been through. Lily also noticed Seri, she immediately saw who she would have been if she had not discovered herself. She made it her mission to help Seri live a better life.
Seri avoided Lily at first, but she relented when she realized that she meant no harm. Lily helped her understand that no human is perfect, she narrated her experiences which were similar to that of Seri. She explained how she almost gave up on living because life was horrible.
It took a while but Seri understood. She had been allowing people dictate what her life should be, they had told her she was ugly, plain, dull and couldn’t amount to nothing. She realized that she had allowed herself to see what the world saw and thought of her, she had given room to low self esteem and insecurities just because of what she had been told.
Seri walked to her mirror and for the first time in years, she gazed back at her image in the mirror. She saw a grown woman who was different from others but unique in her own way. She willed herself to see all the beautiful things about herself. She looked inward and realized that she could do a lot of things others can’t.
She understood that she had been holding herself back because the world and her have ganged up to tell her she couldn’t do it. She saw a woman who would start fighting to be who she was supposed to be. She told herself that she would find happiness and be grateful for all the beautiful things in her life. Even as she kept gazing at the mirror, the image of the woman the world saw faded and in her stead stood a woman who sees herself for who she is.
