Lisa was not listening to the speaker. She got confused the moment he mentioned the word “Impact“. What exactly is “impact”? where can I find it? These questions ran through her mind as she sat in the conference hall. Prior to the conference, Lisa had been having difficulties with her job, her supervisor had said she was intelligent but lacked passion and was too emotional therefore she was at risk of losing her job. He recommended she attend training programs to equip herself.
She had never attended a program training like that, in fact, most of what the facilitators said were words she had never heard before. She looked around and watched people nodding their heads and taking notes but she was lost. Up until that moment, she had never used her social media platforms for anything more than socializing, therefore it was surprising to know that terminologies like Digital Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Content Creation and others exited. Having heard all these, she understood why her supervisor enrolled her for the training. Her knowledge was outdated.
A lot of people are like Lisa, all they know is what they were taught in the four walls of their school. They have not realized that learning today is more than the knowledge they gain in the classroom. There are a lot more you can gain in the real world through research, reading, online courses and training. These set of people are yet to understand that there are skills you can learn even without a classroom.
A popular adage says, no one is an Island of Knowledge. This means you need to learn from people and let them learn from you too. Learning they say, never ends. This applies to every aspect of life. You can learn to be a better cook, a better parent, a better leader, a better friend, and so on. Life for you does not have to be restricted to a point, give room for learning and flexibility.
I remember two years back, I had heard about some of these soft skills but I believed it had nothing to do with me as a writer, I believed all I needed was to practice, write then boom! I am good to go. Of course, in a way, I wasn’t wrong, but then, I might never have the opportunity to stand where my counterparts would. The reason is that I was not ready to know what others knew. Fast forward to last year, I began to realize why I needed to improve through training, I submitted myself to learning, unlearning, and relearning.
The words, “abilities and capabilities” are words that we all like to throw around. But, do you know that your abilities could be worked on to become capabilities? The world has gone digital, deals are being made through the internet, friendships are formed, networking gains ground, influence is paramount and it is affecting everyone. It will be an error to not be equipped with a small dose of knowledge at this age. Deciding to remain rigid could have its own consequences:
1. Promotion could elude you. I mean promotion in all spheres of life including your workplace.
2. Productivity could drop drastically. The reason is that while others have moved on, you could still be battling with a stage. This can lead to discouragement and in turn, low productivity.
3. Passion could be affected. At this point, your enthusiasm and drive could seriously be affected because there is little to no space to be expressed.
It is important not to wait until things start going down before you start working on yourself. Upgrade yourself and strive to become better at what you do by learning. The more learned you are, the more chances of being creative and becoming more productive. There are a lot of things you can do with what is at your disposal, start by learning today and you will be glad you did.
