Tiwa sat at the edge of her table looking out the window, if you didn’t know better you would think she was enjoying the sunset. The truth is that her life was messed up, she had just lost her job and had been robbed by thieves. Her investments were gone with no hope of getting them back. She tried to think of all her plans for life, all the things she had promised herself to do before the big 25, yet, none had been fulfilled.
Life, before she lost her job, was above average, she could do a lot of things comfortably. After her job loss, everything seemed to be spiralling down quickly and it became harder to pay bills. Tiwa was a hardworking woman, one of the best her company had, her promotion was due before she was fired for gross misconduct. Of course, everyone knew it was a set up by the General Manager, he had wanted her to help him embezzle the bonuses meant for the staff but she wouldn’t budge. The fact that she knew about his harassment of female staff didn’t sit well with him either, so, he found a way to set her up. No one could help her at that point because they couldn’t go against him and lose their jobs.
It was right to think that she was being followed by her village people. Everything she had worked for collapsed before the month ran out. For her, the worst happened when she was deserted by her friends, those she thought she could lean on started to avoid her, they wouldn’t pick her calls, they wouldn’t even hear her out. For a moment it all looked like a dream but it wasn’t.
Everyday became the same, days rolled into weeks and weeks into months but nothing seemed to change at all, in fact, it got so bad she couldn’t get another job. She tried to wipe her eyes but the tears kept coming, she couldn’t believe her life would turn out to be so terrible. Waking up each day became a chore, at a point, it felt like she shouldn’t ever wake up to her life of misery, other days felt like a bad dream that she could wake up from.
Tiwa eventually gave up on life, she no longer strived to become one of the best in her field or follow her passion. She no longer worked so hard to attain her goals and become better. Life became passive for her, she shut out everyone else who cared and it became more difficult to trust others. There was no one who could get through to her and it became worrisome.
Life for her became all about survival, nothing else mattered. That was until she received a text:
“Hello, Miss Tiwa, my name is Jessie. I know you might not remember me because it’s been a long time. I was the one you stopped from committing suicide two years back. I know I disappeared after you took me to the hospital but I couldn’t help it. I still remember your advice that night, it became the reason why I am still living today. I am glad to inform you that I have done well for myself and there will be no going back for me. I am forever in your debt ma’am. I will contact you as soon as I am in town. God bless you, ma’am. Take care.”
She read the text over and over again before bursting into tears, her shame knew no bounds. Her motto was: tough times don’t last but here she was about to let her failures win. She cried for hours afterwards and stopped when she had had enough.
At that point, she promised herself to get up and fight. It didn’t matter anymore how terrible the past months had been, it didn’t matter anymore if she had cried herself to sleep every night, it no longer mattered if she had been used and betrayed by some of her friends. All that mattered was that she was ready to rise again, she would not stop fighting until she became better than who she was. Life wasn’t easier but it definitely would not be what it used to be.
