Ola had a weakness, at the end of every month, he would go to his favorite gambling joint beside his workplace and squander half of his salary. Gambling had been his Achilles’ heel for years. His wife had tried all she could but he wouldn’t stop gambling. Every time he promised himself he would put an end to it but it only seemed to worsen as months rolled by. This weakness of his had put him out of numerous jobs, his present job had come with a strict warning yet he found it difficult to stop. He was already addicted.
Jade was a very hard working lady, she was very good at what she does, she was well known and respected by her colleagues. However, she had a weakness, she had no financial discipline. She squandered money on vain and irrelevant things. She had no savings whatsoever and because of this, she had debts racked up.
John on the other hand had been battling procrastination. Every time he promised himself to work on something he would find a reason to postpone doing it. He kept beating himself up about it but he didn’t know how to stop or what to do about it.
The average human has at least one weakness they are battling with. Most people are good with a lot of things yet there is that one thing that keeps drawing them back, there are things that make their lives far from perfection. They are called weaknesses. Everyone has their strong and weak points. There are a lot of areas we find ourselves excelling at but there are also areas we just want to dig graves and bury them in forever. What most people don’t understand is that no human being has it all, everyone has an area they are working on to improve themselves.
It is true that weaknesses are part of human lives but what is not okay is leaving them to become worse or even feeding them. Weaknesses could become strengths if we work on them. They could be polished to become your strong points. They could also become the reason why you never get results or get anything done. There are a few tips on how to deal with weaknesses, this would help you get the most out of your them.
1. Admit you have a weakness
Human beings are proud beings, we fight whatever deals our ego blows. In this case, only a few people will like to admit that they have problems and look for solutions. The first thing to do is to admit that there is a weakness. Weaknesses are not the end of the world, they just show how human you are. Before any progress can be made when dealing with weakness, the affected person must be willing to admit that they have a weakness and they need to work on it.
2. Talk to people
For every weakness, you are dealing with, there are professionals who could help in dealing with them. You can also choose to talk to respected people in your lives who have an idea of how you could deal with your weaknesses or manage them. A popular adage says, “a problem shared is half solved”. This means that when you speak out, your healing process has been put in motion.
3. Find out what works for you
As humans, we have different personalities therefore what has worked for one person might not work for the other, it is important you find out what would work for you. There was a time I had trouble reading. Every time I was supposed to read a book I would procrastinate, so I set a rule for my self. I called it the “one-hour rule”. This meant that I would read for an hour a day or read 50 pages of the book until I was done. I found out I was able to read after setting this rule. This may not work for someone else, which is why it is important to find out what works for you when you are dealing with your weakness. When you find out what this is, make it a routine.
This is the most important part. It is very easy to lax on dealing with your weakness if you are not consistent. You must be willing to be consistent with whatever you are doing to deal with your weakness. Inconsistency could result in a relapse, therefore it is important to make a habit out of what you do. Keep doing it even when it seems so hard to do. This is the only way to get a positive result.
Weaknesses do not mean you are a bad person. It should not be the reason why you will have self-doubt or no self-confidence. Weaknesses could be dealt with and made one of your strong points, all you need to do is to be intentional about it. With time, it gets better.
