Many at times, a lot of wrong decisions that has altered the destinies of many have been made under the influence of the so called acronym “You only live once”. We tend to forget that “all that is in the world is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life” (1John 2:16). People now hide under the canopy of “YOLO” to engage in immoralities, illegal acts and things they ought not to do, justifying their actions with “it’s just one life and I must live it to the fullest” not minding that “for us to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). Many have allowed pressures from friends to have a firm grip on them. Friends who daily chant “you only live once” and encourage bad habits saying “this once”. The statement “this once” has wasted destinies, led to addictions, adultery and fornication and caused many to be in agony. In a bid to make some people feel intimidated, they are told that if they don’t know the recent happenings in the world they are not current and are old fashioned. In response to this, a lot of people have lost their identity by becoming who they are not; they follow the sweet words forgetting that it should be KNOW JESUS; KNOW PEACE AND NO JESUS; NO PEACE.
What has been the essence of your sooth saying? What has YOLO brought you? What benefit did you derive from getting your source of wealth through cunning means? Forgetting that “it is the blessing of God that maketh rich and addeth no sorrow” (Proverbs 10:22). What joy did you derive in doing things the crooked way? Forgetting that “there is a way that seemeth right unto a man but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12). Have you ever paused to think that many who have chanted “you only live once” are no more today? Many have lost it and retracing their steps back has become an unthinkable action.
Many were not given the opportunity to understand that the one-time living was meant to be for Christ. Indeed it’s actually YOLO but from this point of view “It is appointed unto man to die once, and thereafter judgment” (Hebrews 9:27) YOU DIE ONCE BUT YOU LIVE ON. YO- YOU L-LIVE O-ON (YOLO).
Its high time we understood that our existence is of and for God, its high time we knew that while alive we are dead to sin, it’s time to come to the understanding that after this life there is another life. The decision of whether to be alive or dead in that next life depends on our actions now. “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ shall first rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and we shall always be with the Lord” (1thessalonians 4:16-17). Which of these choices would you rather pick? Whether to die now and live on? Or die now and die on? Don’t forget Paul the Apostle said “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but Christ liveth in me…” (Galatians 2:20). We all stand to gain a lot from choosing to be crucified with Christ and then stand nothing to gain from enjoying the temporal and ephemeral things of this world.
By choosing the right path, hatred from people is sure because even Jesus was hated. Jesus never promised a smooth journey but he guaranteed you a safe landing. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). Don’t forget “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any” (1Corinthians 6:12). ALL GODLY THINGS ARE RIGHT BUT NOT ALL RIGHT THINGS ARE GODLY. There is another life after now in which we all should desire to live on. YOLO- You live on!
