To succeed as it was originally designed by God, purpose discovery is paramount. Purpose is the drive that compels you to contribute meaningfully to your generation (Abiodun Babatunde). My interviewee is a man of great influence, a man who is sold out to helping people live the life of their dreams. I implore you to patiently read through and digest all he has in store for you. I wish you good luck as you discover the real you.
You are a man of great influence and your story is extraordinary. I am very sure there are many people out there who would love to know more interesting things about you, your journey so far and who exactly you are. Tell us about yourself.
I’m Abiodun Babatunde, a simple, vibrant and dynamic young man on the journey to greatness. I love to introduce myself as a human capital development coach with unique insights and skills that can facilitate transformations and growth in businesses, organizations, career path and in the quality of lives of individuals. I’m a lover of God, a social change enthusiast, a teacher and an educationist.
A lot of motivational speakers talk about purpose all the time and many youths have not grabbed the meaning. What does purpose mean to you?
Well, I seem to have a non-conventional perspective about purpose. I believe purpose is the integration of what you are in relation to the space you were made to cover in the footprint of time. Every one of us was made to give a specific input to the betterment of this current ecosystem; Purpose then becomes the essence of our lives, our role, our unique assignment and what we were wired to do.
I believe purpose has two legs, one is NATURE and the other is NURTURE. Nature is what you were wired to do, what you just have natural affinity for, things that characterizes your passion and your uniqueness. NURTURE on the other hand is what you grow into as a result of your experience, exposure, service, interaction and growth.
Both of them work hand in hand, NURTURE CREATES AN ENABLING ENVIRONMENT FOR NATURAL AFFINITY AND ASSIGNMENT TO THRIVE.
Is purpose synonymous to life goals?
Well, in a way, purpose can be considered to be synonymous to life goals but in other ways, Purpose is much more than that. I believe a clear understanding of one’s purpose sponsors the pursuit of life goals. Purpose is the drive that compels you to contribute meaningfully to your generation. A purposeful person will always have fantastic life goals but not all goal setters understand purpose.
What do you think hinders youths from discovering purpose?
A couple of reasons; one of which is that youths in this generation focus more on outward beauty than inner awesomeness. This generation is faced with a serious problem of distractions and activities that shift the primary focus of youths from discovering their being. With the advent of social media, youths find it practically difficult to engage in revelatory thought process that can lead to the discovery of purpose.
Considering the influx of social media abuse and other vices youths are facing now, do you think purpose discovery is imperative?
Yes, the discovery of purpose remains highly imperative. I personally believe that a lot of people have unnecessary addiction to social media because they don’t understand purpose; if they do, they will convert social media and internet to tools for the fulfilment and enhancement of their purpose. Social media should be a place for you to push the substance of your purpose to larger audience.
Purpose holds the center of our lives, without it, every other things falls apart.
Tell us about your most embarrassing moment.
WOW!!! It happened over a decade ago; I represented my church in a quiz competition. My church really had trust in my ability to win, so I read and really prepared for it. I got to the stage ready to answer question just to discover that I read outside the scope of the quiz. I failed wonderfully and it was really embarrassing.
I’m happy to say that I didn’t fail, I failed forward. I learnt that preparing isn’t enough; there is a need to know the right sacrifice to pay and to pay it rightly. I learnt that success comes by knowing the right thing to do, doing it rightly at the right time.
We often see some people call themselves hedonists, is it possible to live life to the fullest without discovering purpose?
Is it possible to have a life without purpose? Your purpose is your life, not discovering it is the synonymous to not having a life. Talking on living life to the fullest, the way we were designed is to be only filled by the substance of our purpose. No matter how any individual chooses to live his or her life, no matter the wealth or activities, there will always be a vacuum that can only be filled by the realization and fulfillment of purpose.
People often think purpose discovery is just for spiritual-minded people, what is your take on this?
I guess the word “spiritual-minded people” is a way to sugar coat religious people. Well, purpose has little or nothing to do with religiosity neither is it just for the so called spiritual-minded people. Purpose is about what you were created to contribute to the human race.
Who is the most important person in your life?
Smiles, Apart from the Holy Spirit, I give it to Mr Adewale Alabi. He’s is the president of Pastors’ Kid Network, a friend of over 12 years. It is always awesome to have a secured leader as a friend, someone who can advise, correct and support your vision without any iota of jealousy or distrust.
In our society, people prefer to chase money rather than adding values to themselves. What is your comment on this?
Well, our current society is structured to celebrate mediocrity displayed in material possession. While money is not bad, it cannot replace value. The tragedy of life is to succeed at what does not matter. Anyone who pursues money in place of values will spend the money trying to get the values that can’t be bought. Two popular men in this nation at a time, had 20million naira, one built a mansion, the other started a bank. Today the one who built the mansion cannot live in the mansion again, but the one who started a bank now worth billions of naira. That’s the place of value over money. A man with values knows money is tool to enhance the fulfillment of purpose. A man without value still remains valueless when money comes. Money cannot buy value and it takes value to sustain wealth.
You seem like a superhero that has gotten the best out of life (LOL). Can you tell us your purpose discovery story?
Superhero indeed (LOL). Just like I said earlier, Purpose has two strong legs, one is nature, and the other is nurture. Nature talks about the space you were made to occupy, it talks about your perceived assignment while Nurture talks about what we become by “exposure, experience and consistent doing”. For me, I discovered quite early that I find fulfillment in teaching towards the development and transformation of human. That’s the nature part; I found joy teaching and talking “sense” (LOL) into people. Through service and exposure, I grew the passion, the skills and gained proper definition to the discovered nature. By integrating the growth from “nurturing” to what I discovered as my wiring, I grew (still growing) into become a human capital development coach contributing my quota to nation building.
People set goals and abandon them later on. How can we stay true to our goals?
Have a compelling “why” and a meaningful “how”. While Goals represent what you desire to achieve, setting proper systems and structures fuels and helps the realization of our goals. Everything does not rise and fall on your goals, everything rises and falls on the systems you put in place to achieve the goals. Without a meaningful HOW and WHY, WHAT will only be a highly rated mirage. Aside that, having a network of friends who can be considered as accountability partners also helps. I personally have an accountability partner; we remind ourselves of our weekly and monthly goals, celebrate little achievements and compel ourselves for greater accomplishments.
What are the repercussions of ignoring one’s purpose?
The value you place on a product is directly proportional on the purpose of the product. Our perception of self -worth is strongly attached to our understanding of purpose.
One of the repercussions of ignoring one’s purpose is that such persons will have little or no value on themselves. When you don’t have a good sense of purpose, you can do anything, talk anyhow, eat anyhow, and sleep anyhow. Every job looks like your dream job, you run after what should follow you, you run after Ponzi schemes, etc. When you don’t have direction every road looks like the way but with direction, you can walk with clarity and confidence.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Discover your purpose early, know what you are wired for and pursue it with all you have.
Always remember that Purpose is both NATURE and NURTURE, We are what we do consistently. There is more to why you are on earth than you probably know, the more you grow, the more you discover yourself and your purpose.
What do you do in your leisure time?
Smiles, someone said after you’ve discovered your purpose, even your leisure time will still be directed towards doing things that fuels you up for the fulfillment of purpose. For me, I use my leisure time to invest in myself by reading, thinking and strategizing for the next big thing. Don’t call me a workaholic (smiles).
Your advice for those striving to live a fulfilled life.
Know what matters. Major on the major, mind your business and business your mind because your mind is the seat of your business. Turn your mind to the incubator nest where a new you can always emerge. Don’t forget to always say NO when you need to and always remember not to get carried away with ovations. Keep pressing; keep working till you don’t have to introduce yourself. Work till your result speaks louder than your voice and presence.
Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the privilege.
