As we carry out our daily activities, we should cultivate the habit of self-appraisal to be sure we are on the right track. This topic is a very crucial one and I strongly believe that by the time you are through with this article, you will have a genuine answer to the question.
The word growth is not new to us as it is a development process. Right from when you were born to this process moment, it is evident that some changes have occurred internally and externally. We had to grow to fit into the attitudes and characteristics of adulthood. A five-year-old cannot do what a sixty years old man will do because he/she is not capable of handling issues that come with adulthood. Likewise, when you see a sixty years old man exhibiting the character of a five-year-old, you can easily conclude he is immature. However, age is not maturity. What makes you mature is your ability to handle crucial issues and you would agree with me that there are so many grown-ups who still behave like kids. The bottom line is growth is necessary for you to engage in certain things and if it does not occur, there is a huge problem. I will give the definition of growth for you to comprehend properly. Growth is the process of increasing in amount, value or importance. From this definition, it is evident that growth is not just peculiar to human beings, anything that increases in size, amount or value is said to be growing but for the purpose of this article, I will go with this definition: growth is the process of developing mentally, physically and spiritually.
Human beings are peculiar and our features and abilities make us stand out in all ramifications. The way we think, act and talk differentiates us from animals in the forest. Did you notice the words: think, act, talk? If you fail to exhibit these three characteristics, we can liken you to a dog, goat or sheep and I believe we all agree with that. Even a baby you deliver today will think better than an old monkey. God has given us such superpowers. Let us not deviate from the topic.
Benjamin Franklin said: “without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning“. Weighty and very true, yeah? How do you improve on yourself when you have nothing to build upon? How do you make achievements when you have not made conscious efforts to develop yourself? How do you become successful when progress is absent? If you are not moving forward, its either you are stagnant or diminishing. How do we explain the case of an individual who should be doing exploits but for one reason or the other has chosen to remain in a spot? Yet, he/she laments things are not moving smoothly for him/her.
Growth is a continuous thing and the earlier you realize, the better. Even those at the top still strive to be better at what they do, not minding the sacrifices they must make. Success is meaningless if you remain ignorant. We all go to school to add to our knowledge knowing that there is a great prize at the end of the day. Artisans did not just emerge! They took their time to learn and acquire the necessary skills to earn a living. So if you think you do not belong to the school category, let me inform you that you cannot run away from learning.
Check this out! Years back, I had this very talented hairdresser. She had customers who came from various locations to make their hair. She made cool money and because of how popular and comfortable she was, she relaxed. About two years later, a new hairstyle came from nowhere and ladies began to go crazy. People had heard of her expertise and they expected she would be at the top. One day, I went to her salon to make my hair as usual and four ladies walked in. They mentioned the name of the hairstyle and to my surprise, my hairdresser knew nothing about it. I could see the disappointment on their faces as they walked out. As at then, it was a very expensive hairstyle (it was reigning) and we found out later that those ladies came to Nigeria for an event and were to leave for the USA that weekend. They loved the hairstyle and wanted to show their people abroad. Now, imagine how much she would have made that day. They probably would have given her more money for the satisfaction they would derive. Well, she was advised to visit a fashion school to sharpen her skills. She listened and things became better for her.
What am I trying to bring out? In our various walks of life, we need to put in a lot of effort to derive a lot of satisfaction. You do not have to wait until your skills and knowledge become obsolete before you take a bold step. There are several opportunities out there for you to become a better person. Learning will not kill you! It will make you stand out and be the best among your counterparts. You can grow and improve your mindset with inspirational books, articles and materials. Attend conferences and seminars that are centered on personal growth. Stop being lazy! Move with people who are growth-oriented, your association speaks a lot about you.
All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort and effort makes work – Calvin Coolidge. This is self-explanatory. Nothing goes for nothing, activities must be carried out for growth to occur.
For a moment, scan through your life, compare your performance five years ago with where you are presently and ask yourself the question: am I growing? If your answer is yes, I congratulate you, do not relent! If otherwise, it is not too late. As long as you are existing, you can and will make it. You just have to pick yourself up and do the needful.
Remember, success is meaningless without growth and progress.
