The way you do things is as a result of your habit which has developed based on the accumulation of all your past experiences right from infancy. Habit is the automatic way you respond and react to things going on around you. It has been defined as the bedrock wherein everything you are or will ever be is built on. The way you talk, reason, approach people and even react to situations around you is been governed by your habits. As a matter of fact, how in shape or out of shape you are, how happy or unhappy you are, how successful or unsuccessful you are is as a result of your habits, your habit drove you to where you are presently.
Bad habits can be as destructive as a wildfire. The truth about bad habits is that it does not jump on you abruptly, but it comes like a comfortable bed, lures you into itself and then gets you stuck. It is necessary to shun habits like this and if care is not taken, it might cut off your relevance. Habits are capable of determining your level of attainment in life.
One of the bad habits everyone battles with on a daily basis is procrastination and it is very common amidst both young and old. Most times we shift what we ought to do and the funny thing is that those periods are filled with virtually nothing. That is, we might not be able to account for what we achieved during the period. Procrastination is nothing but a time waster.
One of the reasons why most people procrastinate is because of excessive perfectionism. I suppose that procrastination is caused by fear of failure or perhaps fear of success. We procrastinate because we are dealing with perfectionism, low self-esteem, or negative self-beliefs. Therefore, we procrastinate to protect ourselves, thinking that the reward of procrastination is often relieving stress, which is not true.
This is what I believe, anything learned can equally be unlearned. Bad habits were learned, therefore they can be unlearned. But you must note that “old habits die hard”, this is not going to happen easily, serious determination and persistence is demanded.
To break any bad habit, there are four essential Cs you cannot but observe.
• Confess: you must be able to identify those bad habits you want to work on. Declare you truly need help in those areas.
• Communicate: it is not necessary to go around discussing your bad habits since you have identified it yourself. Although, in some situations, there is always a need for it. Make a research on how to overcome those habits, read books on it and if you have a more matured friend or personality you can discuss with, you can as well do so.
• Construct: it is very important to strategize ways by which you want to overcome those habits. Such as goal setting, fining yourself, affirmation, rewarding yourself et al.
• Comply: it is something to take your time to plan, it is another thing to work by it. With all determination, you must be able to comply with all these new principles you have set for yourself to get the better version of yourself.
You might be satisfied with the level you are today if not, you must discard those habits that hinder you from moving forward. Remember they said, “bad habits are easy to form, but hard to live with while good habits are hard to form but easy to live with”. It is very essential to form good habits and make them your master.
