Virtually everyone of us is guilty of Self medication. We all find it difficult to come to terms with ourselves that we are sick and need medical attention. Sometimes, we feel this way because of financial constraint or fear of the “Doctor’s report“, we then assume the role of a doctor or nurse and begin to administer drugs. At the end of the day, it might not be as bad as we imagined. Some people even go as far as treating other people that complain of one symptom or the other and in the long run compound issues that should have been settled in the first place.
Often times, we can deduce whatever the problem is. Take, for example, headache! Everyone knows the next thing to use is a pain killer. The problem arises when this symptom persists and you fail to seek help. Do you know that sometimes your predictions can go wrong? I heard the story of a man who always complained of stomach upset. He told a neighbor and somehow both of them came to a conclusion it was Ulcer. He believed this fake diagnosis and started using all sorts of drugs. After a year, it became worse and uncontrollable, so he decided to visit the hospital. Well, proper tests were carried out and they detected his liver was bad. Guess what? It was too late! To cut the story short, he lost his life.
Now, how many of us are still ignorant or negligent? Mentioned below are some of the hazards of self medication.
• Inaccurate Diagnosis: some symptoms might appear the same but cannot be ascertained without a proper checkup. Self medication is based on assumptions. Stop assuming, be sure!
• Overdose: how will you know the appropriate prescription when you are not a physician? I wonder. So many people have lost their lives because of the wrong combination of pills and overdose.
• Addiction: funny but true. I know people that are addicted to taking Paracetamol, Panadol, etc. When you get accustomed to taking too many pills, you find it difficult to do away with them. It then seems like your life depends on it.
• Wrong medications: imagine using Flagyl for malaria. I believe you know what is next.
And so on…
Self medication, though taken with levity is an issue that requires urgent attention as some are still and will remain ignorant. Kindly refer anyone you feel requires medical attention to a genuine hospital. Shun ignorance and live a long and healthy life.
Remember, to achieve those great dreams and goals, there is a need to be hale and hearty.
