I once had a friend whose colleague at work was a habitual latecomer. My friend always teased his colleague by saying if she did not work on her lateness, she would find herself going late to her wedding. Yes! It was that bad and alas! It happened just as my friend told her. Many of us are just like my friend’s colleague. We are so used to lateness that we see it as part of us. Truth be told, to some, waking up early is not the issue (I would tag them the early risers and late goers). For others, the issue is not getting ready, it is a thing of the mind. These set of people have gotten to the stage where they cannot imagine themselves going early for any function. Contrary to this, we have another set of people who see waking early as a taboo (I would tag them the late risers and late goers). However, the most justifiable reason could be unforeseen circumstances. Funny but true, you hear things like they will not start early, am I the one anchoring the event? There is still time, why will I be the first to get there? ‘I cannot come and go and die‘, etc. Tell me, what is your own excuse for lateness?
For all the times you have been going late, have you not noticed that you are always under pressure and stressed? Many times some are even hooked up with fear of the unknown. A lot of us have missed job offers, examinations, important meetings, interviews whose credit goes to our non-challant attitude towards PUNCTUALITY. You know, it will not cost you a thing to be punctual but it will cost you lots of things to be late. How then can you overcome this habit?
First, you need to understand that being punctual does not mean you are stupid or that you take things too seriously as some will say but it is a virtue which I will call EXCELLENCE! Excellence is possessing good qualities in an eminent degree. Being punctual depicts reliability and responsibility which births respect; it shows to the other party that you do not take things with levity but seriousness.
Secondly, you need to work on your mind. Change your orientation about punctuality, look at all you stand to gain from being punctual and make efforts towards becoming a better person. At first, you will not find it easy but as they say, continuous practice makes perfection, punctuality can be your new habit over time. So, get started today! Be determined to change, stop being tagged a habitual latecomer. Do not be too predictable. Stop being that person everyone knows will always come late for everything and anything. Shock them!
Also, I will say make deliberate efforts. Expunge those things that delay you. Be deliberate about them. Take conscious steps in waking up early, getting dressed and preparing. Yours might not be the aforementioned but whichever it is, do everything in your power to see that you work on all the grey areas.
Build your reputation!
