Have you noticed something about this dispensation? Everyone is trying to fit in. Everyday, something new springs up and no one wants to be left behind. Some do it to impress while others are simply lost in the crowd. It is amazing how people go out of their way to be called funky and classy. In the long run, they live to regret their actions. Hey! It is OK to be different.
Here is a rhetorical question. Since you have been trying so hard to please others, have you earned the respect you desire? Take a deep breath and ponder on this carefully. You see, we fail to understand no one cares and the more we try to force our way into their hearts, the more we hurt ourselves.
Dare to be different! Ever heard of that? Of course, the answer is yes. But do we really apply this? You do not have to do what others feel is desirable. You do not have to do what others say is beneficial to you. You do not have to tread the path everyone treads. It is OK to love different things, it is OK to dress in a way you feel comfortable, it is OK to be the odd one out as long as you are doing the right thing. Say no to the regular statement “he/she is so weird“.
Back in school, I used to have this funny classmate. She was totally different from everyone, her lifestyle, the way she saw and perceived certain issues was so off. She was so confident, she voiced out her opinion to our teachers. She was our common enemy and we did everything within our power to frustrate her each time we had the opportunity to. Do you know the hilarious part? Each time we did that, it was like adding petrol to fire, instead of feeling bad about herself, she would become more energetic. At the end of the day, we decided to let her be and pretend to go with whatever she said.
One day in school, one of my classmates got into trouble with the school authority. Actually, it was a false allegation. We all knew she was not involved in what happened but we could not speak up. The poor girl was so helpless and perplexed. Guess what? This weird girl in our class beckoned to a teacher, explained everything and told the teacher she was ready to face the school administrator. To cut the long story short, the issue was resolved. Now imagine, after acting tough and fearless, we could not defend our classmate. The “black sheep” of the class bailed us out. You should know what happened thereafter, she became the queen and we all realized no one is useless. The nerd eventually helped us in our time of need.
If we desire to make our world a better place to live in, we all must dare to be different. I have written about this severally: we were all created with unique attributes. Though human, we are not the same. We all live to compliment each other and we should learn to accept ourselves for who we truly are.
Stop making your neighbour feel bad about him/herself. Stop making another person feel uncomfortable because he/she has refused to be what or who you want them to be. Embrace yourself and embrace others. Stand out wherever you find yourself and do not compromise your values for any reason. People know the truth but have chosen to be ignorant.
Prove to the world that you are special in your own way.
