We have so many people out there beating up themselves because of circumstances surrounding them. Everyone has a story to tell as we all at one point in time have fallen victim of low self-esteem.
I interviewed a young, vibrant and intelligent lady on this topic. She has decided to air her view on low self-esteem. Read and get inspired!
Can I meet you?
My name is Awojobi Olayimika, I am a Nurse Aide. I work to improve people’s health and help with their activities of daily living.
In your own words, what is low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a state of mind whereby individuals think less of themselves in comparison to those around them.
Do you think low self-esteem and timidity mean the same thing?
I think timidity is the house where low self-esteem lives. Timidity is built by fear while low self-esteem is a product of fear.
At what point does one begin to detect he/she has low self-esteem? What are the signs?
Detecting low self-esteem is based on the individual. Some people shy away from the truth, others are defensive about it, some cover it up by bragging unnecessarily while some know it themselves as a result of various life experiences. Some signs of low self-esteem includes fear to speak up, social fear, depression, anxiety when relating with people, etc.
Have you ever had low self-esteem? If yes, tell me your story.
Yes! so many times, this is the least of all. In my Junior Secondary School days, people used to make jest of me because my uniform was never sparkling clean. My low self-esteem made me fight everyone at the slightest chance.
From what you have just said, can we then conclude that low self-esteem births violence?
Yes! People instigate it. It is your choice whether to be affected or not. You start beating yourself up on the inside and fight others on the outside, hence violence. You know, you can loose your mental health as a result of low self-esteem.
How did you overcome it?
The Bible says the truth shall set you free. Honestly, the word of God is able to set us free. Listening to it and reading it builds up your faith and destroys the house that fear has erected. Hence, there is no space for low self-esteem in your life. I can say boldly that I overcame low self-esteem through the word of God.
I have also decided to never compare myself with anybody, social media or social pressure is not a yardstick for anything that concerns my life.
Advice those that have low self-esteem
Do not strive to please man, strive to please God. Never let people or their opinion determine who you are or who you will become.
Thanks so much for your time
