The society is changing and everything is moving so fast. The ideas and beliefs we had in time past are becoming obsolete. Now, you make a statement and people around you say you are “old school”. This shows that we have new approaches of dealing with certain matters. In fact, a person without proper I.T. knowledge would feel lost and not involved.
I saw this and I quote: “the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn – Alvin Toffler”. I did a lot of thinking and of course realized it is the bitter truth.
We all have our definitions of who an illiterate is. Some will say an illiterate is someone who cannot read and write while others will say an illiterate is someone who does not have proper knowledge of a particular subject. I believe ignorance breeds illiteracy. Do you know in the real sense, we have “educated illiterates“? Funny, right? These are people who passed through school but have nothing to show for it. Now, this has nothing to do with grades or even the certificate. It has everything to do with composture and manner of approach on all life situations.
Let’s talk about learning, unlearning and relearning. The day you stop to learn is the day you die. No one knows it all and of course learning is a continuous process. If anyone says he/she is done learning, I am afraid that person is not a human being. We learn from people, we learn from our past (mistakes) and we learn from life experiences. For any man to grow, learning is imperative. I try not to take anything for granted. Whenever things happen to me, I extract the lessons from them.
The process of unlearning is not simple. Unlearning involves doing away with ideas, assumptions and facts that one already has. You have to let go of somethings you felt you already understood and make a new way of understanding them. This is important for those who were taught how to do things in an unlikely manner. The truth is it is very hard to separate oneself from things like this. Having done this, relearning is necessary. This of course entails learning things you already know in a different way. We have new methods of handling issues, get conversant with them and keep trying to improve yourself. No one is perfect!
Please note that education is important. However, some people who did not pass through school are way better than those who feel they have achieved a lot. Everything has to do with the individual. Be open, make your brain receptive and shun ignorance!
