As small as the tongue is, it is very powerful. Every word we speak matters. The words of our mouth can either comfort or destroy the lives of people around us. We must be mindful of the things we say because our words are valuable and powerful.
Words when spoken can never be taken back. The moment it drops, whoever it is spoken to feels sad or happy. Many at times we say things we really do not mean but because we are always in a hurry to respond, we end up hurting people. We are humans and it is normal for us to misunderstand each other. Our manner of approach is what really matters.
I went to market with my mum sometime ago and a vendor insulted her because she tried to beat down the price of what she wanted to buy. I got so angry and decided to defend my mum. Surprisingly, my mum cautioned me and pulled me away. Honestly, that did not stop me from talking. She looked at me and made this statement: “you do not have to respond to all that people say, they might try to use your words against you”. You know, I used to think people would say I am stupid whenever I fail to give the appropriate response to those that say bad things to me. Now, I understand what people mean when they say silence is golden.
You do not have to speak all the time. You must consider the consequences. Even though people forgive you, they can never forget how you made them feel. Think it, do not say it. Of a truth, it is not easy but when we practice self control, we would find this very easy.
Colossians 4:6 “let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt so that you may know how to answer everyone”.
Proverbs 12:18 “the words of the reckless pierce like swords but the tongue of the wise brings healing”.
Let the words of your mouth give succour to people.
